ChatGPT Go vs Plus vs Pro: Limits, Models and Which Plan to Pick
Go is $8, Plus $20 and Pro $100, $200 or $500 a month. What each ChatGPT plan includes, the published limits, the September 29 changes and who needs which.
ChatGPT has six personal plans. Go and Plus share the same context window, but Go can’t use OpenAI’s stronger chat model. The three Pro tiers all get the same models. And the “Pro is 20× Plus” figure you’ll still find in a lot of guides, including Google’s own AI answers, stopped being true for new subscribers on September 29, 2026.
Here’s what each plan includes, using the numbers OpenAI publishes and saying so where it doesn’t publish any. Everything was checked on October 7, 2026 against OpenAI’s pricing page, help center and release notes, plus the App Store and press reports where we say so.
ChatGPT plans compared
| Plan | Price (US) | Ads | Top chat model | ChatGPT Work and Codex | Context with reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Yes | GPT-5.6 Luna | Limited | Varies |
| Go | $8 a month | Yes | GPT-5.6 Luna | Limited | 256K |
| Plus | $20 a month | No | GPT-5.6 Sol | Included (1×) | 256K |
| Pro 100 | $100 a month | No | GPT-6 Pro | 5× Plus | 400K |
| Pro 200 | $200 a month | No | GPT-6 Pro | 10× Plus (per OpenAI’s email) | 400K |
| Pro 500 | $500 a month | No | GPT-6 Pro | 25× Plus | 400K |
All three Pro tiers also get GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. Pro 200’s 10× applies to new subscribers; anyone with an active Pro 200 subscription between September 22 and September 29 keeps the old allowance through October 29. OpenAI bills Go, Plus and Pro monthly only, and annual billing exists only on its Business and Enterprise plans.
Outside the US, prices are set locally. In the App Store, Go is £6.99 in the UK and €7.99 in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, and Plus is £19.99 and €22.99. We explain why prices differ in what AI plans cost in each country.
What changed on September 29, 2026
OpenAI reshuffled its Pro plans on September 29:
- Pro 500 launched at $500 a month, with 25 times Plus’s usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex. It’s the only Pro tier with GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast.
- Pro 200 reopened. OpenAI’s help center had announced a pause on new Pro 200 sign-ups from September 10. New subscribers now get what OpenAI calls “a lower usage allowance” for the same $200. Its email to existing subscribers puts the new level at 10× Plus, down from 20×.
- Existing Pro 200 subscribers keep the old allowance through October 29, 2026. From October 30, the same email says, their GPT-6 Pro limit in chat falls from 200 to 100 messages a week.
- Dots, always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra, launched for Pro, but not yet in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK.
So if a guide tells you Pro means 20× Plus, it was written before the change.
Go vs Plus: what the extra $12 buys
| Go ($8) | Plus ($20) | |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday chat | Unlimited, with GPT-5.6 Luna | GPT-5.6 Sol, limits not published |
| Thinking | Think with Luna | Sol at Medium and High thinking |
| Ads | Yes | No |
| Context window | 54K Instant, 256K reasoning | The same |
| Library storage | 4 GB | 20 GB |
| Voice | Up to 3 hours a day, GPT-Live-1 mini | Up to 3 hours a day, GPT-Live-1 |
| Image creation | More than Free | More complex and accurate, also with Thinking |
| ChatGPT Work and Codex | Limited, desktop app | Web, desktop and mobile |
| Legacy models, Sites, developer mode | No | Yes |
| Projects, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks | Yes | Yes |
Go is a good plan if you mostly write, study or ask questions. Unlimited chat with Luna covers a lot, and the context window matches Plus, so it can take in documents of the same length. What Go lacks is GPT-5.6 Sol, OpenAI’s stronger chat model, and people who have switched say it shows on harder questions. In a busy r/ChatGPT thread comparing the plans, a user who dropped from Plus to Go described the answers as “more error-prone”.
OpenAI doesn’t publish image, upload or deep research counts for any plan, only labels like “more” and “expanded”. Your in-app counter shows how many deep research tasks you have left.
Plus is worth the difference if you need better reasoning, if you code, or if you want ChatGPT Work, OpenAI’s agent for longer tasks across your apps and files. It’s also the cheapest paid plan without ads.
Plus vs Pro: when Plus stops being enough
Plus has limits in two places.
In chat, Plus tops out at GPT-5.6 Sol, and OpenAI doesn’t publish a message count for it. The Pro models, GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, aren’t on Plus at all.
In ChatGPT Work and Codex, Plus gets one shared allowance with two windows: a five-hour window and a weekly one. OpenAI brought back the five-hour window for Plus on August 25, 2026. These are OpenAI’s own estimates for Plus:
| Model in Work and Codex | Local messages per 5 hours on Plus |
|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | 5–45 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | 15–160 |
| GPT-6 Sol | 15–150 |
| GPT-6 Luna | 350–3,000 |
OpenAI stresses that these are estimates, not fixed limits. Bigger inputs, higher reasoning effort, Fast mode and cloud tasks all use the allowance faster. Also note that GPT-6 Astra on Plus is only available in Work and Codex, not in chat.
Pro adds:
- Currently no five-hour limit in Work and Codex, just a weekly allowance of 5×, 10× or 25× Plus.
- The Pro models in chat, GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, and every thinking level.
- A bigger context window: 128K tokens in Instant mode and 400K with reasoning, against 54K and 256K on Plus.
- More of everything else: 100 GB of library storage, unlimited image creation within abuse limits, more voice, and what OpenAI calls “maximum deep research”.
- Dots, outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK.
One warning before you upgrade: the Pro plan isn’t the same as the Pro model. In a widely shared r/ChatGPT thread from May, someone asked whether they’d paid $100 for a day and a half of Pro. They hadn’t lost the plan. They’d used up the week’s allowance for the Pro model, and the top reply pointed out they’d been using the most expensive model for everything. Today Pro 100 includes 50 Pro-model messages a week, shared between GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. Save them for the hardest problems and let the regular models handle the rest.
Pro 100 vs Pro 200 vs Pro 500
| Pro 100 | Pro 200 | Pro 500 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $100 a month | $200 a month | $500 a month |
| Work and Codex usage | 5× Plus | 10× Plus for new subscribers (per OpenAI’s email) | 25× Plus |
| Five-hour limit | Currently none | Currently none | Currently none |
| GPT-6 Pro in chat | 50 a week, shared with Sol Pro | 200 a week on OpenAI’s help page | Not published |
| Voice | Up to 15 hours a day | Unlimited | Not published |
| GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast | No | No | Yes |
| Models | All Pro models | All Pro models | All Pro models |
For Pro 200’s chat limit, OpenAI’s help page still lists 200 GPT-6 Pro messages a week, while its email to existing subscribers says that falls to 100 from October 30.
Ultrafast generates text up to eight times faster, around 300 tokens a second in Codex, and it uses your allowance eight times as fast, or six times when you pay with credits. On the day Pro 500 launched, one X user posted that they’d burned through the whole weekly limit “in under 30 minutes” on Ultrafast.
There’s no $50 plan, although plenty of people have asked for one. If Plus runs out only now and then, credits fill the gap. They cost $0.04 each in the App Store, last 12 months, and cover Codex, ChatGPT Work and ChatGPT in Word, Excel and PowerPoint once your plan’s allowance is used. If you find yourself topping up every week, compare what you spend with Pro 100’s $100.
Teams can also look at ChatGPT Business. A Premium seat costs $100 per user a month billed yearly, or $125 monthly, with five times a Standard seat’s usage and no five-hour limit. Dots work on Business Premium in the EU and UK too. It needs at least two paid seats.
Which plans show ads?
Free and Go show ads. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise don’t. Ads started as a test in the US on February 9, 2026, and reached Canada, Australia and New Zealand in April, the UK in June and 31 European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, at the end of August.
OpenAI says ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers and that it doesn’t share your conversations with advertisers. On the Free plan you can switch to Ads-Free, which comes with lower limits and no image generation or deep research. Go doesn’t have that option.
Which ChatGPT plan should you choose?
- Free, if you use ChatGPT now and then and don’t mind ads.
- Go, if you chat, write or study every day, the ads don’t bother you, and you don’t code.
- Plus, if ChatGPT is part of your work, you want the better model without ads, or you code a few sessions a week.
- Pro 100, if you hit Plus’s five-hour limit in Codex most weeks, need the Pro models for hard problems, or work with very long documents.
- Pro 200, if Codex or ChatGPT Work runs for most of your working day.
- Pro 500, only if Pro 200 runs out or you need Ultrafast.
You can change plans in Settings → My Plan. Moving down, say from Plus to Go, takes effect at the end of your billing cycle. OpenAI doesn’t publish how it charges for an upgrade partway through a cycle. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, change the plan there, although moving from Free straight to Pro has to be done on the web. And usage limits don’t reset when you renew: OpenAI says its support team can’t reset them either.
Paying for several months at once
OpenAI doesn’t sell yearly or multi-month Go, Plus or Pro plans. We sell multi-month Plus, Pro 100 and Pro 200 terms on your own ChatGPT account, paid once in crypto. These are the all-in prices for a US account, including our service fee:
| Plan and term | OpenAI, billed monthly | You pay here | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus, 3 months | $60 | $56.10 | $18.70 |
| Plus, 12 months | $240 | $182.08 | $15.17 |
| Pro 100, 1 month | $100 | $110.00 | $110.00 |
| Pro 100, 12 months | $1,200 | $884.20 | $73.68 |
| Pro 200, 1 month | $200 | $216.00 | $216.00 |
| Pro 200, 12 months | $2,400 | $1,749.40 | $145.78 |
We sell Plus, Pro 100 and Pro 200 for accounts in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. We don’t sell Go or Pro 500. We never charge you again, and your activation steps show how to make sure the plan doesn’t renew on its own.
Before you prepay for a long Pro term, know that OpenAI can change what a plan includes along the way, as it did with Pro 200 on September 29. ChatGPT
OpenAIQuestions people ask
Which is better, ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Go?
Plus, if you can use what it adds: GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT Work and Codex, image creation with Thinking, and no ads. For everyday writing and questions, Go’s unlimited chat with GPT-5.6 Luna is enough for many people, and its context window is the same as Plus.
What are the limitations of ChatGPT Go?
Go shows ads and can’t switch them off. It doesn’t include GPT-5.6 Sol, its ChatGPT Work and Codex access is limited to the desktop app, its library holds 4 GB, voice uses the smaller GPT-Live-1 mini model, and image creation with Thinking isn’t included.
How much is ChatGPT Pro per month?
Pro costs $100, $200 or $500 a month in the US, billed monthly. In the UK App Store the three tiers cost £88.90, £200 and £444.99.
Is ChatGPT Pro still 20 times Plus?
No, not for new subscribers. Since September 29, 2026, new Pro 200 subscriptions come with what OpenAI calls “a lower usage allowance”, and its email to existing subscribers puts it at 10× Plus, down from 20×. Pro 100 is 5× and Pro 500 is 25×. Existing Pro 200 subscribers keep the old allowance through October 29.
Does ChatGPT Plus have a message limit?
OpenAI doesn’t publish a fixed number for GPT-5.6 Sol in chat. In ChatGPT Work and Codex, Plus has a five-hour window and a weekly window, and OpenAI gives ranges such as 5 to 45 GPT-6 Astra messages per five hours.
Can I pay for ChatGPT Plus yearly?
Not with OpenAI. It says it doesn’t support annual billing or paying for several months in advance on Plus. Only Business and Enterprise have yearly plans. Resellers such as ours sell prepaid terms of up to 12 months.
Is GPT-6 included with ChatGPT Plus?
Partly. Plus gets GPT-6 Astra and the other GPT-6 models in ChatGPT Work and Codex, but not in chat. GPT-6 Pro in chat is only on the Pro plans.
