Claude Pro vs Max: How the Usage Limits Work and Which Plan You Need
Claude Pro costs $20 and Max $100 or $200. How the 5-hour and weekly limits work, what each plan gets you in chat and Claude Code, and when an upgrade pays off.
Anthropic sells three personal plans: Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x. The features barely differ. What you’re choosing is how much you can use Claude before it asks you to wait. That makes the decision easy once you understand how the limits work, and confusing until you do.
Prices and plan details here are from Anthropic’s pricing and help pages, checked in October 2026.
The plans and what they cost
| Plan | Price | Usage | Billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited | — |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200) | At least 5× Free per session | Monthly or yearly |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | 5× Pro | Monthly only |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | 20× Pro | Monthly only |
Every paid plan includes Claude on the web, desktop and mobile, projects, and Claude Code. Free doesn’t include Claude Code or the Opus models.
How Claude’s usage limits work
Claude counts usage in two layers.
The 5-hour session. Your usage is measured over a rolling five-hour window that starts with your first message. When you hit the session limit, you wait until the window resets.
The weekly limit. Paid plans also have a weekly cap. It stops someone from using every session to the maximum, every day, all week.
Both limits are shared between chat and Claude Code. An afternoon of agentic coding in your terminal uses the same allowance as chatting on claude.ai. When you run out, paid plans can switch on usage credits, billed at API rates, to keep working.
What counts as “usage” isn’t a message count. It depends on how much text Claude has to read and write. A short question in a new chat costs little. The same question at the end of a long conversation with three PDFs attached costs much more, because Claude reads the whole conversation again for every reply.
Which models you get
Anthropic’s current models, from smallest to largest, are Haiku 4.5, Sonnet 5.5, Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1. Opus 5.5 came out on September 22, 2026, and Anthropic says it costs 40% less to run than Opus 5.
Fable 5.1 sits above Opus. On Pro it’s only available through usage credits. On Max 5x and Max 20x you can use it as part of the plan, up to half of your weekly limit.
For most everyday work, Sonnet is the sensible default. It’s fast and uses your allowance more slowly. Save Opus and Fable for the hard problems.
Who should pick which plan
Pro, if you use Claude every day for writing, research or analysis, and for Claude Code in focused bursts. Most people who hit a limit on Pro hit it a few times a month, not daily.
Max 5x, if you hit Pro’s session limit several times a week, or Claude Code is part of your working day for hours at a time. It’s the usual step up for developers who use Claude Code daily.
Max 20x, if Claude Code runs most of the day, you run several sessions in parallel, or you want regular access to Fable 5.1.
Three signs it’s time to upgrade
- You plan your day around the reset. If you keep checking when the 5-hour window ends, the limit is costing you time.
- You hit the weekly limit before the week is out. Session limits are annoying. Weekly limits stop you for days.
- You’re paying for a lot of extra usage. Pro plus $80 of usage credits costs the same as Max 5x, which gives you five times Pro’s usage. Past that point, Max is the cheaper way to get the same work done.
Getting more out of the plan you have
- Start a new chat for a new task. Long conversations make every reply more expensive.
- Put reference material in a project instead of pasting it into chat after chat.
- Use Sonnet for routine work and switch to Opus when the problem needs it.
- In Claude Code, keep the task focused. Point it at the files that matter rather than letting it explore the whole repository each time.
- Time big jobs. If a long session is coming, start it early in a fresh window.
Claude gift subscriptions
Anthropic sells Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x as gifts at claude.ai/gift, for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. A few rules from its help center are worth knowing:
- A gift is redeemed on your own Claude account, on the web.
- An unredeemed gift expires 365 days after it was bought.
- Gifts can’t be stacked. Redeem the next one after the current gift ends.
- If you pay for Claude through the App Store or Google Play, cancel that subscription and wait until it has ended before you redeem a gift.
That gift route is how we sell Claude for crypto. You pay in USDT, Bitcoin, Monero or another coin, and receive an official gift link on your order page. Because gifts work in every country Claude is available in, there’s no region to choose.
Here’s what that costs on our store. Pro comes in 3, 6 or 12 months. Max starts at one month.
| Plan and term | Anthropic price | Discount | Service fee | You pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro, 3 months | $60 | −$9.00 | $5.10 | $56.10 |
| Pro, 12 months | $200 | −$60.00 | $12.40 | $152.40 |
| Max 5x, 1 month | $100 | — | $10.00 | $110.00 |
| Max 20x, 1 month | $200 | — | $16.00 | $216.00 |
A year of Pro at $152.40 works out to $12.70 a month, below Anthropic’s own yearly price of $17 a month.
Claude
AnthropicQuestions people ask
Does Claude Code work on the Pro plan?
Yes. Claude Code is included with Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x, and shares the plan’s usage with chat. It isn’t included with Free.
Do unused limits roll over?
No. Session limits refill on a rolling 5-hour basis and the weekly limit resets each week. Capacity you don’t use is gone.
What happens when I hit the limit?
You can wait for the 5-hour window to reset, or turn on usage credits to keep going at API rates. If you hit the weekly limit, you wait for the weekly reset or use credits.
Can I try Max for just one month?
Yes. Anthropic bills Max monthly, and on our store Max starts at a single month. A gift simply ends when its term is up. It’s a good way to find out whether you actually need it.
Is Max 20x four times better than Max 5x?
It gives four times the usage for twice the price, and the same features. Only buy it if Max 5x’s limits are actually stopping you.
