Card Declined on ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini? Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Why AI subscriptions reject cards: bank blocks, 3-D Secure, address mismatches, card types and unsupported countries. The fixes that work, and a crypto option.

A plain black payment card leaning against a closed brass padlock, with brass coins in front

“Your card was declined” is one of the least helpful messages on the internet, and AI subscriptions show it a lot. Anthropic’s help center says it plainly: when a payment fails, Anthropic doesn’t get a detailed reason from your bank. OpenAI and Google are in the same position. Most declines happen on the bank’s side, and the vendor only sees a no.

So the fastest fix is usually a two-minute call to your bank. Before you make it, it helps to know what to ask. These are the causes we see most, roughly in order of how often they come up, with what each vendor recommends.

1. Your bank blocks foreign or online payments

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are billed by US companies. For a card issued outside the US, that’s a foreign transaction, and many banks block those by default, or block online card payments altogether until you switch them on.

OpenAI’s help center tells you to check with your bank whether it blocks international or online transactions. Google’s payments help lists the same cause: the bank declined, or the card “isn’t enabled for international or online use.”

Fix: Turn on online and international payments in your banking app, or ask the bank to approve the merchant. Then try again once, not ten times. A string of quick retries can make the bank’s fraud checks more suspicious, not less.

2. 3-D Secure fails

In the UK, the EEA, Australia, India and several other places, card payments often need a second step: a code by text message or an approval in your banking app. This is 3-D Secure. In the UK and the EEA, Strong Customer Authentication rules require it for many online payments, and other countries have similar rules.

It fails more often than it should. The approval window may never appear because a pop-up blocker or a VPN gets in the way, or the bank sends the confirmation to an old phone number.

Fix: OpenAI suggests allowing pop-ups and redirects, turning off ad blockers and VPNs, and trying a private window or another browser. Have your banking app open before you press pay. If no prompt ever arrives, ask the bank to enable 3-D Secure on the card.

3. The billing address doesn’t match

Card checks compare the address you type with the one your bank has on file. Anthropic warns that “even minor discrepancies” can trigger a decline, such as a missing accent or a misspelled street name. Google requires the billing address in Google Pay to match the card. Anthropic also asks that your billing address be in the country the card was issued in.

Fix: Copy the address exactly as it appears on your bank statement, including the postcode format. If you moved recently, update the address with your bank first.

4. The card type isn’t accepted

Not every card works everywhere:

  • Claude only accepts credit and debit cards for web subscriptions. PayPal and Venmo attempts “will likely be declined,” in Anthropic’s words.
  • ChatGPT takes cards and a few local methods. OpenAI says prepaid cards can’t be used for API credits, and doesn’t say whether they work for subscriptions. A regular bank card is the safer choice.
  • Google Play doesn’t accept virtual credit cards, which matters if you subscribe to Gemini from an Android phone.

Fix: Use a regular debit or credit card from a bank in your own country.

5. Your country isn’t supported

This is the one no payment trick can fix. OpenAI requires that both your location and the country that issued your card are supported. Anthropic lists 185 countries and regions where Claude is available. Google AI Pro is sold in more than 150. China, Hong Kong, Russia, Belarus, Iran, Cuba, Syria, Venezuela and North Korea are missing from both the OpenAI and Anthropic lists.

OpenAI also warns that using ChatGPT from an unsupported country “may result in your account being blocked or suspended.”

Fix: None from the payment side. Paying in crypto, through a friend’s card or any other way doesn’t change where the service is allowed, so we won’t pretend it does.

6. The app store and your card disagree

If you subscribe inside the ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini mobile app, Apple or Google handles the payment, and their rules apply. Your App Store or Google Play country has to match a payment method from that country. Changing it takes a payment method from the new country, and Google Play only lets you change country occasionally. Google payments profiles have an extra catch: you can’t change a profile’s country at all. If you moved, you need a new profile.

Fix: Subscribe on the website instead of in the app, with a card from the country your account is set to.

7. A renewal failed

Sometimes the first month goes through and the renewal doesn’t. OpenAI says renewals “may occasionally fail due to security measures” or problems with the card. Expired cards are a common cause on Google One.

Fix: Update the card in your account’s billing settings before the renewal date, not after the plan lapses.

A checklist before you call the bank

  1. Card number, expiry date and CVC typed correctly, with enough funds available.
  2. Online and international payments switched on in your banking app.
  3. Billing address copied exactly from your bank statement.
  4. VPN and ad blockers off, banking app open for the 3-D Secure prompt.
  5. A regular debit or credit card, not a virtual or gift card.
  6. Subscribing on the website, not inside the mobile app.

If all six are fine, the bank is declining on purpose. Ask it what it’s seeing.

Don’t dispute a charge to fix a payment problem

If a payment goes through twice or you were charged for something you didn’t get, ask the vendor for a refund before you call your bank. OpenAI and Anthropic both say they can’t refund you while a chargeback is open. Customers in the EU and UK can usually cancel within 14 days for a prorated refund under both companies’ terms, which is faster than a dispute.

When the card still won’t work: pay in crypto

If you’ve done all of the above and the card still fails, there’s another route. None of these companies takes crypto directly, but you can pay us in USDT, Bitcoin, Monero or another coin, and we activate the plan on your own account. You keep your login, your history and your settings. There’s no card in the picture, so the bank checks above don’t apply.

It doesn’t get around country rules. We prepare ChatGPT, Gemini and most other plans for accounts in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, and Claude gifts work in every country Claude itself is available in. Our step-by-step ChatGPT guide shows the whole process.

Questions people ask

Why does my card work everywhere else but not on ChatGPT?

Usually because ChatGPT is a foreign merchant for your bank, or because it triggers a 3-D Secure check that other shops don’t. Local shops and big marketplaces you’ve paid before are already trusted by your bank. A new, foreign subscription isn’t.

Will a VPN fix a declined payment?

It usually makes it worse. A VPN can make your location look different from your card’s country, and OpenAI specifically suggests turning VPNs off when 3-D Secure fails.

Can I pay for ChatGPT or Claude with PayPal?

Not on the web. OpenAI’s list of payment methods doesn’t include PayPal, and Anthropic only accepts cards for web subscriptions. Google One does accept PayPal in some countries.

Can I use a prepaid or virtual card?

Not reliably. Claude needs a credit or debit card, Google Play rejects virtual cards, and OpenAI rules out prepaid cards for API credits without saying whether they work for subscriptions. Use a regular bank card if you can.

How many times should I retry?

Once or twice, after you’ve changed something. Repeating the same failing payment doesn’t help and can trip your bank’s fraud filter.
