GitHub Copilot Pricing and How to Pay: PayPal, Crypto and Gift Cards
GitHub Copilot Pro is $10 a month, Pro+ $39 and Max $100. Which payment methods GitHub accepts, why prepaid cards and crypto fail, and what to do instead.
We only sell official gift links, codes, cards or keys that work on your own account.
Billed to the GitHub account itself. No gift route.
0 requests so far. Requests are anonymous and help us decide what to add next.GitHub Copilot is billed to your GitHub account, and GitHub is clear about what it takes: a credit card or PayPal. There’s no crypto checkout, prepaid cards are refused, and GitHub lists no Copilot gift card. This page covers GitHub Copilot pricing, the ways you can pay, and alternatives you can buy with crypto.
These facts were checked on October 7, 2026. Copilot billing changed a lot this year: GitHub paused new Pro, Pro+ and Student sign-ups on April 20, moved every plan to usage-based AI credits on June 1, dropped yearly plans, added a $100 Max plan and began reopening sign-ups on June 17.
GitHub Copilot plans and prices
| Plan | Monthly | AI credits included | What it’s for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copilot Free | Free | An allowance, plus 2,000 code completions a month | Trying Copilot, with automatic model choice only |
| Copilot Student | Free for verified students | An allowance, with unlimited completions | Students, with automatic model choice only |
| Copilot Pro | $10 | 1,500 (1,000 base + 500 flex) | Everyday coding. Free for verified teachers and maintainers of popular open-source projects |
| Copilot Pro+ | $39 | 7,000 (3,900 base + 3,100 flex) | Heavier use, with premium models |
| Copilot Max | $100 | 20,000 (10,000 base + 10,000 flex) | New in 2026, with “priority access to premium models” |
| Copilot Business | $19 per seat | 1,900 per user | Organizations |
| Copilot Enterprise | $39 per seat | 3,900 per user | Organizations on GitHub Enterprise Cloud |
GitHub lists prices in US dollars only and publishes no pound or euro prices. One AI credit is worth $0.01, and included credits reset at 00:00 UTC on the 1st of each month without rolling over. Code completions and next-edit suggestions are unlimited on paid plans and don’t use credits. For more, you set a budget for extra usage: “a $10 budget covers 1,000 AI credits.”
There’s no yearly price any more: GitHub retired annual plans on June 1, 2026. Existing yearly subscribers can keep their plan until it ends, cancel for a prorated refund, or switch to monthly with prorated credit.
How GitHub Copilot takes payment
Copilot goes on your GitHub bill, under Settings → Billing & licensing. If you already pay GitHub for something, Copilot is added to your next bill, pro rata. GitHub’s payment methods page lists credit cards and PayPal for personal accounts, with one firm rule: “Prepaid credit/debit cards are not accepted as a valid form of payment.”
| Payment method | Accepted? |
|---|---|
| Credit cards | Yes |
| Prepaid cards | No |
| PayPal | Yes |
| Apple Pay or Google Pay on github.com | Not listed in GitHub’s docs |
| Crypto (Bitcoin, USDT and others) | No |
| Gift cards or prepaid codes | No official ones |
| App Store (iPhone) | Yes, in the GitHub app |
| Google Play (Android) | Yes, in the GitHub app |
| Azure subscription | Not for personal accounts |
| Invoice or ACH bank transfer | Managed accounts only, not personal ones |
At checkout GitHub may place a temporary authorization hold on your payment method to verify it. If that check fails, “your plan will not activate.”
In a July 2026 thread on GitHub’s community forum about a failed Copilot Pro payment, the community answer blamed Indian rules for recurring card payments (e-mandates) and suggested PayPal. Our guide to declined cards on AI subscriptions covers the usual causes.
Can you pay for GitHub Copilot with crypto?
No. GitHub has no crypto checkout, and its billing docs don’t list crypto as a payment method. Your realistic options:
Pay with PayPal. It’s an official payment method for personal accounts, and it’s what the community answer in that July thread suggested when a card was refused.
Subscribe in the GitHub app. The US App Store lists Copilot Pro at $10.00, Pro+ at $39.99 and Max at $99.00 as in-app purchases, and GitHub’s docs confirm the Android app sells them through Google Play too. On iPhone, Apple is the merchant and charges your Apple Account balance before your card, though it notes that some subscriptions can’t be paid from balance. One catch from GitHub’s docs: with a plan bought on iOS or Android “you cannot enable additional GitHub AI Credits.” To buy extra usage, you’d have to cancel and subscribe again on github.com.
Use a crypto card, with care. A crypto debit card sells your coins at the moment you pay, and GitHub sees an ordinary card. But GitHub refuses prepaid cards, so a crypto card issued as a prepaid card won’t work, and any card can still be declined. The card issuer will also ask for your ID.
What you shouldn’t do is buy a “Copilot key” or a shared account from a marketplace. Neither is an official product: a Copilot plan is tied to the GitHub account it was bought on.
Gift cards and paying for someone else
GitHub’s docs list no Copilot gift card, gift subscription or prepaid code, so any “Copilot gift card” sold elsewhere isn’t a GitHub product. GitHub Sponsors isn’t a workaround either. It sends money to open-source developers and doesn’t buy Copilot for anyone.
The official way to pay for someone else is through an organization. The organization buys Copilot Business at $19 per seat per month and assigns a seat to that person. If they already pay for Pro, Pro+ or Max themselves, GitHub cancels that personal plan automatically and gives a prorated refund.
Alternatives you can pay for with crypto
If what you want is an AI that writes and edits code, three of the plans we sell include their own coding agent, and you can pay for them in USDT, Bitcoin, Monero and other coins:
- Claude Pro and Max include Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent. We sell them as official Claude gifts. See Claude Pro vs Max for how the limits work.
- ChatGPT Plus and Pro include Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent. ChatGPT Go vs Plus vs Pro compares the limits.
- SuperGrok includes Grok Build. Our Grok pricing guide explains the tiers.

Can I pay for GitHub Copilot with PayPal?
Yes. PayPal is one of GitHub’s official payment methods for personal accounts, alongside credit cards.
Can I use a prepaid or crypto card for Copilot?
Not a prepaid one. GitHub’s billing docs say “Prepaid credit/debit cards are not accepted”, and GitHub has no crypto checkout.
Is there a GitHub Copilot gift card?
No. GitHub’s docs list no official Copilot gift card or gift subscription. The legitimate routes are a Copilot Business seat from an organization, or free access for verified students, teachers and maintainers of popular open-source projects.
How much is Copilot Pro?
Copilot Pro is $10 a month with 1,500 AI credits included, and $10.00 in the iPhone app. GitHub no longer sells it yearly.
Can I subscribe to Copilot in the iPhone app?
Yes. The GitHub app sells Copilot Pro at $10.00, Pro+ at $39.99 and Max at $99.00 through the App Store. You can’t add extra AI credits to a plan bought this way.
Are Copilot sign-ups open again?
Yes. GitHub paused new Pro, Pro+ and Student sign-ups on April 20, 2026 and began reopening them gradually on June 17, after 58 days.
